This spring, two material recovery facilities (MRFs) operated by Waste Connections in California will bring food and beverage carton recycling to nearly 1.5 million more Californians across five counties.
Once active, residents in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Lake, Mendocino, and Sonoma counties will be able to recycle cartons as part of their existing recycling programs. This new carton sortation builds on nationwide momentum for carton recycling, which expanded to 2.5 million new U.S. households in 2025.
Residents can expect to see these changes reflected in local recycling program guidance in the coming weeks.
